The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Bike for Road Cycling

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just getting started, choosing the best bike for road cycling can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it’s important to find a bike that fits your budget, riding style, and personal preferences. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll help you navigate the world of road cycling bikes, offering advice and top recommendations. From budget-friendly options to top-of-the-line models, we’ve got you covered.

The Benefits of Cycling

Before we dive into the specifics of choosing the best bike, let’s take a moment to highlight the numerous benefits of cycling. Riding a bike is not only a fun, adventurous way to explore the outdoors, but it also provides a full-body workout that can help improve cardiovascular health, build muscle strength, and boost mental wellness. Whether you’re commuting to work, touring scenic routes, or taking on challenging hill climbs, cycling offers endless opportunities for fitness and exploration.

Understanding the Types of Road Cycling Bikes

When it comes to road cycling, there are several types of bikes to consider. Each type of bike is designed for a specific style of riding and comes with its unique set of features.

Race Bikes

Race bikes are designed for speed and performance. These bikes feature aerodynamic frames, aggressive geometry for quick handling, and large gears for high top-end speeds. If you’re aiming for competitive cycling or simply love the thrill of speed, a race bike could be your best bike choice.

Endurance Bikes

Also known as sportive bikes, endurance bikes prioritize comfort and stability for long-distance rides. These bikes typically feature more upright riding positions and relaxed frame geometry. If you’re planning for long rides or prize comfort over speed, an endurance bike may be the best cycle selection for you.

All-Road Bikes

All-road bikes, also known as gravel bikes, offer a versatile option for those who like to mix up their riding surfaces. These bikes are designed with larger tyre clearances, enabling them to handle both paved roads and light off-road trails. If your cycling adventures take you both on and off the tarmac, consider an all-road bike.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Bike

Selecting the best bike for your road cycling needs involves considering several key factors, including your budget, the bike’s frame material, groupset, brakes, wheels, and tyres. Let’s delve into each of these aspects.

Budget

Your budget plays a crucial role in determining the type and quality of bike you can afford. The good news is that the market offers options for every price point. Even if you’re on a tight budget, you can still find reliable and well-performing bikes. On the other hand, if you have a larger budget, you can explore high-end models with advanced features and technologies.

Best Bike for Low Budgets

For those on a tight budget, consider the Triban RC 520 Disc. It’s a great value bike that offers features typically found on more expensive models, such as an 11-speed Shimano 105 groupset and TRP HY/RD hydraulic disc brakes. Despite its affordable price, the Triban RC 520 Disc doesn’t compromise on performance, offering a comfortable and relaxed ride that’s ideal for beginners and casual riders.

Best Bike for Medium Budgets

If your budget is slightly higher, consider the Specialized Allez Sport. This versatile road bike features an E5 Premium aluminium frame, Shimano Tiagra 10-speed groupset, and hydraulic disc brakes. With its increased tyre clearance and rack and mudguard mounts, the Allez Sport is perfect for everything from fast recreational rides to light gravel duties and commuting.

Best Bike for High Budgets

For those with a higher budget, the Giant Propel Advanced Pro 0 AXS makes an excellent choice. This aero bike offers all-out speed without excess weight and cost. It’s equipped with an advanced-grade composite frame, a Shimano Ultegra 11-speed groupset, and hydraulic disc brakes. If you’re looking for top-of-the-line performance and speed, this could be your best cycle pick.

Frame Material

The frame material of your bike significantly influences its weight, ride quality, and price. The most common materials used for bike frames include aluminium, carbon fibre, steel, and titanium. Aluminium and carbon fibre are the most popular choices for road bikes due to their lightweight and strength.

Best Bike with Aluminium Frame

The Cannondale CAAD13 Disc 105 stands out as an excellent aluminium-framed bike. This race-ready bike features a SmartForm C1 Premium Alloy frame, a Shimano 105 groupset, and hydraulic disc brakes. With its winning record under professional riders, the S5 proves its worth as a top-quality carbon bike.

Groupset

The groupset of your bike refers to the collection of parts that control its gearing and braking. The quality of the groupset can greatly impact the bike’s performance and feel. Among the most popular groupset brands are Shimano, SRAM, and Campagnolo.

Best Bike with Shimano Groupset

The Specialized Allez Sport comes with a Shimano Tiagra 10-speed groupset, offering reliable and smooth gear shifting. If you’re a fan of Shimano and looking for a versatile road bike, this could be your best bike choice.

Best Bike with SRAM Groupset

If you prefer SRAM groupsets, consider the Giant Propel Advanced Pro 0 AXS. This bike features a SRAM Force eTap AXS 12-speed groupset, providing precise and quick gear changes. As an added bonus, the wireless electronic shifting eliminates the need for cables, giving the bike a clean and sleek look.

FAQ

Not sure how virtual fitness works?

The easiest way to learn is to try Fitwins for yourself! The app is free to download, and you only pay for challenges you take part in, so why not take it for a test drive?

In the meantime, here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about how Fitwins compares to other virtual walking challenges.

No! We believe that flexibility is the key to fitness success, so instead of forcing you to complete a set distance, we let you set your own goal.  This means you can be flexible in how you complete YOUR challenge: so if you are smashing your target, you can raise the bar and aim for more.

All entries into our challenge will receive a great medal, with a ribbon specific to the challenge type.

For our “iconic challenges”, your ribbon will have a unique design related to the challenge. For our regular monthly challenges, your ribbon will reflect the total distance you covered.

Running and walking ribbons are awarded based on 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200+ miles. Cycling ribbons are for distances of 50km, 100km, 200km, 500km, 1000km, 2000km and 3000km.

Absolutely! Not only that, but all the distance you’ve covered since the start of the month will count, as the Fitwins App syncs with Strava and logs all activities from the start of the month, regardless of what date you sign up for the challenge.

If you are hitting the streets with your app activated, verification is completed automatically by sycning with Strava. You can focus on completing your challenge, and we’ll take care of the rest.

If you’re using a treadmill, exercycle or other stationary equipment for some of your challenge, you’ll need to log this manually.
