We’ll review every aspect of the running shoes and help you decide if it is worth spending your hard earned coin.

Once you have finished reading this article you will know if the Asics Gel Kayano 27’s are the running shoes for you.

What Are The Asics Gel Kayano 27s?

The Asics Gel Kayano 27’s are the upgrades from its predecessor, the Asics Gel Kayano 26. The most opulent everyday training shoe from ASICS designed for overpronators is the GEL-Kayano.

The Kayano shoe’s creator had exactly this in mind when creating it: a supportive, solid running shoe that doesn’t sacrifice comfort.

Since 1993 the Kayano line has grown and continues to focus on comfort, stability and durability in each creation. With upgrades to each aspect of the shoe with every new creation, the Kayano line has become a bestseller amongst runners.

The Asics Gel Kayano 27s are fitted with a more breathable upper and come with Asics latest invention, the Space Trusstic System.

The hard piece of plastic in the midsole (under the midfoot) known as the SPACE TRUSSTIC SYSTEM works to stabilise the shoe by preventing twists.

This gender specific system has been designed to make the footstrike smoother with more rolling. This allows the foot to move more naturally within the shoe and complete the foot gait without any added stress or pressure. .

Asics Gel Kayanos are known for providing not only luxurious comfort but also stability when running.

This is due to Asics Dynamic Duomax technology. This is a firm foam which lies under the inside of the arch to prevent overpronation, a common cause of injury and discomfort for runners.

For runners who have a propensity to overpronate, the Dynamic Duomax foam supports the foot and offers more stability.

This feature allows runners to have more control and confidence in their strides. As the foot is allowed to move as naturally as possible there is still a large amount of support and stability offered.

Running in a shoe which is uncomfortable can make a minute seem like an hour. The Asics Gel Kayano 27’s are fitted with their renowned FlyteFoam and GEL technology.

Running enthusiasts who like a lighter, springier feeling without the shoe being overly soft and energetic will benefit most from the FlyteFoam in the midsole.

On both dry and wet runs, the AHAR rubber on the outsole provides good traction with the ground. You will be comfortable without slipping as you run.

While the FlyteFoam midsole provides comfort, the GEL technology provides high quality shock absorption. The GEL works by compressing itself as the running lands each stride, absorbing the shock from the surface and dispersing it throughout the sole of the shoe.

This helps prevent injury to the joints and muscles. Especially on hard terrains such as sidewalks and concrete paths. The supple GEL material gives off more bounce and facilitates a more fluid foot striking.

The Kayano 27’s are flexible, soft and springy. Perfect for everyday or long distance running. While these shoes are mainly designed for running on firm surfaces such as roads and forest trials, there is an ample amount of stability and comfort to run on any terrain.

Fit & Upper Unit

While the fit of a shoe is completely personal, some shoes are just designed better than others.

In place of the exterior component that was under the ankle, ASICS chose to concentrate on the sturdiness in and around the Achilles tendon and heel. This is what makes the Asics Gel Kayano 27’s lighter than the Kayano 26’s.

The shoe is snug giving you security and flexibility throughout the shoe, specifically the midfoot and toe box.

The tie up laces allow the runner to secure the shoe as tightly or as loosely as they wish. This keeps the shoe secure and comfortable throughout the run.

As for the upper unit, the freshly designed mesh is stylish and supportive. The engineered mesh works to promote natural movement of the foot while maintaining a structure. Using mesh has allowed the shoe to be breathable and durable.

Asics Gel Kayanos 27’s are documented to be true to size and offer a secure, snug fit which brings a sense of comfort when running. While being fitted throughout the midsole, the shoebox can be tighter than other shoes offered by Asics Gel.

The GEL Technology Cushioning System in the forefoot and rearfoot, on the other hand, attenuates shock during the impact and toe-off phases and permits movement in numerous planes when the foot changes gait cycles.

Solid Heel Cap

Much like the Asics Gel Kayano 26 running shoes, the 27’s have incredible grip around the foot. Also known as the MetaClutch exoskeleton heel system.

The Kayano 27’s prevent the foot from slipping and sliding around in the shoe, providing a much more solid landing. This further increases the stability of the shoe as it guides your foot through the entire strike.

While the heel cap is firm, reliable and stable, it still remains comfortable. The inside of the heel cap is padded with soft material to ensure there is no rubbing whilst in action.

The exoskeleton heel system along with a cushioned collar works well with the stability system fitted in the midsole. Providing runners with a comfortable, stable and enjoyable experience.

Heel To Toe Drop

The height difference from the heel of the shoe to the forefoot. The higher the drop the more load that is borne on the hips and knees whilst the lower the drop the more load that is placed onto the ankles and lower legs.

While most running shoes offer a standard 10mm drop, the Asics Gel Kayanos 27’s offer a 12mm drop. Perfect for those new to running and need that extra support.

The Kayanos 27 offer help to those suffering with plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, midfoot pain and metatarsal stress fractures.

Asics Gel Kayano 27 outsole is made from AHAR (ASICS High Abrasion Rubber). This is a high quality, durable rubber material made to last against scrapes and bumps. This ensures the sole has more traction in any condition, wet or dry.

With a combination of mesh and synthetics, the upper unit of the shoe is breathable and long lasting. The foot is free to roll naturally through the gait whilst remaining structured and stable.

ASICS GEL Kayano 27’s Vs. Nimbus 23’s

While both Asics Gel and Nimbus are popular shoes from the Japanese shoe brand, these two shoes could not be more different. The Nimbus 23 are neutral running shoes.

Neutral running shoes are used by runners who have neutral or ‘correct’ running form. Whereas, the Asics Gel Kayano 27’s are designed to support those who overpronate and need more control in their strides.

Both shoes are lightweight, comfortable, and flexible but the Nimbus 23’s offer a higher drop height. This is important depending on where the runner requires more support.

A higher heel to toe drop will put more loading on the hips and knees, while a lower drop puts more load onto the foot, ankle and lower leg.

When it comes to comfort both shoes offer medium-soft cushioning and a springy bounce which is great for everyday training.

Both shoes offer FlyteFoam propel technology and FlytFoam cushioning technology which increases shock absorption. This is crucial for preventing injury and lessening the impact on the knees and hips when landing.

Over time this technology will lessen but both shoes are known for their durable Asics lite rubber outsole. Keeping the shoe light and able to last through miles and miles of runs.

Final Thoughts

Looking for a lightweight, durable running shoe that will keep your foot comfortable? The Asics Gle Kayano 27’s are an excellent choice.

With Dynamic Duomax technology fitted to help support the foot and boost stability for those whose experience overpronation when running.

The Space Turassic technology, which is incorporated into the midsole, adds stability and lightens the load to aid in a more fluid change from foot strike to toe-off.

Deeper forefoot flex grooves that produce a smoother roll during toe-off and enable the shoe to move more naturally with the foot go hand in hand with the enhanced stability.

The Asics Gel Kayano 27’s are perfect shoes for both competitive and non-competitive runners. Whether you run everyday or on your off days, the Asics Gel Kayano 27’s combine comfort with support without sacrificing style.

Look stylish, feel comfortable, protected and stable all while achieving your goals.

In the meantime, here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about how Fitwins compares to other virtual walking challenges.

No! We believe that flexibility is the key to fitness success, so instead of forcing you to complete a set distance, we let you set your own goal.  This means you can be flexible in how you complete YOUR challenge: so if you are smashing your target, you can raise the bar and aim for more.

All entries into our challenge will receive a great medal, with a ribbon specific to the challenge type.

For our “iconic challenges”, your ribbon will have a unique design related to the challenge. For our regular monthly challenges, your ribbon will reflect the total distance you covered.

Running and walking ribbons are awarded based on 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200+ miles. Cycling ribbons are for distances of 50km, 100km, 200km, 500km, 1000km, 2000km and 3000km.

Absolutely! Not only that, but all the distance you’ve covered since the start of the month will count, as the Fitwins App syncs with Strava and logs all activities from the start of the month, regardless of what date you sign up for the challenge.

If you are hitting the streets with your app activated, verification is completed automatically by sycning with Strava. You can focus on completing your challenge, and we’ll take care of the rest.
